Of the 35 calypsonians vying at today’s semifinal round of the National Calypso Monarch competition, only three have claimed boasting rights to the title. They are Michael ’Sugar Aloes’ Osuna, Winston ’Gypsy’ Peters and Sandra ’Singing Sandra’ Des Vignes-Millington. Osuna captured the title in 2002 with ’Jubilation Time’ and ’Contribution’, and again in 2008 with ’Reflections’. Singing ’Soldier of Success’ in first position at Skinner Park, San Fernando, today, Osuna hopes to once again traverse the Dimanche Gras stage and cop another win. Peters, who has had a tumultuous history at Skinner Park, the home of the ’acid test’, returned to the competition last year and was warmly received by the large audience. In 1997, Peters took the calypso world by storm with his (now) classic ’Little Black Boy’ and ’Rhythm of the Nation’. A heavyweight in the industry, Singing Sandra is always a force to be reckoned with. She became the first woman to be crowned calypso monarch twice. On the first occasion in 1999, the haunting ’Voices From The Ghetto’ and ’Song for Healing’ did it for her. She followed up in 2003 with ’For Whom the Bell Tolls’ and ’Ancient Rhythm’. Should these three make it to the finals on Carnival Sunday night, they will come up against eight-time monarch and reigning champ Dr Hollis ’Chalkdust’ Liverpool. Liverpool topped the pack in 1976 (’Three Blind Mice’ and ’Ah Put on Me Guns’), ’77 (’Juba Dubai’ and ’Shango Vision’), ’81 (’Ah Can’t Make’ and ’Things That Worry Me’), ’89 (’Chauffeur Wanted’ and ’Carnival is The Answer’), ’93 (’Kaiso in de Hospital’ and ’Misconceptions’), ’04 (’Trinidad in the Cemetery’ and ’Fish Mongrel’), ’05 (’When I Vex, I doh Rhyme’ and ’In Town Too Long’) and last year with ’My Heart and I’. The competition is scheduled to kick off at noon.
